Welcome to the KCYP Blog Monthly Non-Profit Feature! This month we are featuring Safe Passage, a local organization created to support victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, and human trafficking. Here are all of the details to know if you'd like to give back to this organization.
In 1976, three families in Coeur d'Alene opened their homes to victims of domestic abuse. Available through law enforcement, churches and the hospital, these homes were deemed “safe houses”. Just one year later, in response to the violence in our community, the Women’s Center we now know as Safe Passage was incorporated to serve the five northern counties in Idaho. Any and all victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, and human trafficking are directed to and taken care of by Safe Passage.
Staffed 24/7, Safe Passage offers confidential housing to protect victims, court advocates, a clinical services coordinator, and an on-call hospital advocate. They also now have a program called "Safe Bars" to assist local alcohol-serving businesses in creating safe and respectful workplaces with active bystander skills, self-defense & de-escalation tactics.
Safe Passage’s Children’s Advocacy Center works directly with law-enforcement and child protective services to offer a trauma informed forensic interviews - on average, seeing one child per day. They also offer advocacy to the non-offending parent, while the child is being interviewed.
Three annual events are held in support of Safe Passage, including their popular Hats & Hooves Derby Day Brunch in May, a Golf Tournament in July and A Martini Affair in October. Event Tickets are available here. You can also give back to Safe Passage by Donating Here, gifting Safe Passage specific items listed here, learning about Volunteer Opportunities here, or attending their monthly SEE Into Our Future gathering to learn more. Of course, you can also spread the word about this amazing organization and save the crisis hotline (provided below) in your phone in the event you or someone you know may need it.
When you donate your time and/or money to Safe Passage, you are helping the two in five Idaho women and one in five Idaho men that experience sexual violence. In reference to 2022, donations were able to fund 2,390 safe nights at the Safe Passage shelter or at local hotels, 865 crisis hotline calls, 409 survivors as they faced their abusers in court with the help of Safe Passage advocates, and so much more. Just this year, there have been 206 child physical/sexual abuse cases last year, trending almost one child per day.
Do you know of someone in need of Safe Passage services? Their office is open for walk-in assistance Monday through Thursday 8:30am to 5:00pm and Friday 8:30am to 3pm. You can also call or text Safe Passage 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
